This week’s personal finance topic is about water temperature when it comes to washing your clothes.
Many people think that washing in hot water is safer; however, choosing cold is fine for most clothes including delicate fabrics such as lace and silk.
Inversely, blood and sweat can set into fabric in hot water and clothes tend to fade and shrink certain fabrics.
The other benefit when washing in the cold is that the hot water heater is not using gas or electricity.
According to GE, An estimated 75 to 90 percent of all the energy your washer uses goes to warming up the water.
Hence, switching to colder water is budget friendly as it should reduce the gas or electric bill.
Now here’s another thing: if you have a high efficiency washer, they use less water and are equipped for detergents designed for this purpose.
So to be certain on which setting to wash your clothes in, review the dots on the labels which tell you the correct temperatures and go from there.
The bottom line is that washing in cold should reduce your utility bills, especially with a high efficiency washer. And the best part is: it’s better for the environment.
