PFT #43 - Personal Finance Tip: A Breathalyzer is a Low Cost Purchase to Save Money and

Updated: Mar 5, 2022

According NHSTA, one alcohol-related death occurs every 52 minutes and drunk driving causes more than 10,000 deaths every year.

In addition, a drunk driving violation can result in many unwanted outcomes such as: Large fines, community service, jail time, an alcohol treatment program, the use of an interlock device before you can start your vehicle, regular in person testing, license suspension, and points on your driver’s license.

This can lead to a large increase in your auto insurance premium.

An easy solution is to have a designated driver, or use a rideshare app like Uber or Lyft.

However, not everyone makes the smart choice not to drive, and this leads us back to the breathalyzer.

From my research the prices ranged from $18 to $130. For example, the BACtrack S80 model is DOT & NHTSA approved so I know that the readings will be accurate.

This is a reasonable purchase for the benefit that it provides.

The bottom line is that avoiding a drinking and driving situation is better for everyone’s pocketbook and more importantly it saves lives.
